Towards a harmonized asylum system
The project was launched by EASO in order to find out to what extent it is possible to involve experts from other member states in the asylum procedure of a member state, i.e. ‘joint processing’.
Our Belgian colleagues considered their visit to the Dutch IND as a very positive experience. They thought working procedures between Belgium and The Netherlands to be very similar, with some differences. This project convinced our colleagues that it is possible to achieve a more harmonized asylum system in the EU.
In addition to the adoption of EU legislation, it is important to reinforce practical cooperation between member states to harmonize the asylum system. This project is just one example of how cooperation between European colleagues can lead to a better knowledge of and more trust in each other’s asylum systems and eventually to further harmonization.
