Asylum statistics October 2015

  • 4.810 asylum applications were registered in Belgium in October 2015, a decrease of 12,7 % compared to September 2015.
  • In October, the main countries of origin were : Syria (1.497 applications, 31,1 %), Afghanistan (1.177 applications, 24,5 %), Iraq (748 applications, 15,6 %) and Somalia (169 applications, 3,5%). Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq represent more than 70 % (71,2 %) of all the asylum applications registered in Belgium in October 2015. Applicants of undetermined nationality (2,5 %), Iran (1,8 %), Albania (1,7 %), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1,7 %), Guinea (1,6 %) and Russia (1,5 %) complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
  • Of the 4.810 asylum applications registered in October, 372 (7,7 %) are multiple applications.
  • In October, the total number of decisions taken by the CGRS amounted to 1.609 of which 247 decisions concerned multiple applications (95 decisions taking the application into consideration and 152 refusals to take the application into consideration).
  • Among the 1.362 other decisions (decisions on the substance) taken by the CGRS in October, there were 657 decisions to grant refugee status and 136 decisions to grant subsidiary protection. In October 2015, the protection rate thus amounted to 58,2% (793 positive decisions out of 1.362 decisions on the substance).
  • At the end of October, the total caseload of the CGRS consisted of 7.847 cases. With a normal caseload of 3.900, the real backlog amounts therefore to 3.947 cases. It has to be noted that a considerable amount of applications registered in 2015 have still to be transmitted to the CGRS by the Immigration Department.
