Asylum statistics May 2015

The CRS has published the asylum figures for May 2015 (PDF, 927.2 Kb).

The following information can be taken from these statistics:

  • In May 2015, 1,708 asylum applications were filed in Belgium, i.e. an increase of 32.5 % in comparison with April 2015.
  • In May, the main countries of origin were Somalia (413 applications, 24.2 %), Syria (202 applications, 11.8 %), Iraq (168 applications, 9.8 %), Afghanistan (160 applications, 9.4 %) and Guinea (55 applications, 4.3 %). Russia (3.4 %), Eritrea (3.3 %), asylum seekers whose identity is undetermined (2.5 %), Albania (1.9 %) and DR Congo (1.9 %) complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
  • Please note that for the first time, Somalia is on top of the list of countries of origin with 413 asylum applications filed in May 2015 (against 318 for the whole year of 2014).
  • 354 (20.7 %) of the 1,708 asylum applications registered in May are multiple applications. These applications are mainly filed by asylum seekers from Afghanistan (37 applications), Russia (35 applications) and China (21 applications).
  • In May, the total number of decisions taken by the CGRS amounted to 1,228 decisions, 272 of which were taken as part of the processing of multiple applications (128 decisions taking the case into consideration and 144 decisions refusing to take the case into consideration).
  • Among the 956 other decisions (decisions on the substance) taken by the CGRS in May, 450 decisions granted refugee status and 112 decisions granted subsidiary protection. In May 2015, the protection rate amounts to 58.8 % (562 positive decisions out of 956 decisions on the substance).
  • At the end of May, the total workload of the CGRS consisted of 5,775 cases. 3,900 cases can be considered as a normal workload. The actual workload consists of 1,875 cases.
