Asylum statistics December 2015

  • 4,201 asylum applications were registered in Belgium in December 2015, almost the same number as in the previous month (4,199).
  • In December, the main countries of origin of asylum applicants were Afghanistan (1,955 applications, 46.5 %), Syria (718 applications, 17.1 %) and Iraq (335 applications, 8 %). Afghan, Syrian and Iraqi nationals represented 71.2 % of all asylum applicants in Belgium in December 2015. Iran (3.7 %), Russia (2.1 %), Somalia (2.1 %), Guinea (1.9 %), DR Congo (1.7 %), applicants of undetermined nationality (1.6 %) and Albania (1.2 %) complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
  • Of the 4.201 asylum applications registered in December, 303 (7.2 %) are multiple applications.
  • In December 2015, the CGRS took a total of 1,732 decisions, of which 189 decisions concerned multiple applications (71 decisions taking the application into consideration and 118 refusals to take the application into consideration).
  • Among the 1,543 other decisions (decisions on the substance) taken by the CGRS in December, there were 909 decisions to grant refugee status and 186 decisions to grant subsidiary protection. In December 2015, the protection rate therefore amounted to 70.1 % (1,095 positive decisions out of 1,543 decisions on the substance).
  • At the end of December 2015, the total caseload of the CGRS amounted to 11,305 cases. With a normal caseload of 4,500, the actual backlog consists of 6,805 cases.
