Applicants for international protection may be vulnerable and in need of special procedural guarantees in the asylum procedure because of (a combination of) various reasons or circumstances.
This may be due, for example, to factors that led to the departure from the country of origin, to personal characteristics of the applicant (age, gender, gender identity...) as well as to the circumstances and events to which the applicant has been exposed on his way to the host country or even in the host country itself.
In this context, the mission of the CGRS consists of identifying applicants with special procedural needs as soon as possible in order to provide appropriate support. After all, every application for international protection must be processed and assessed equally. Applicants for international protection with physical and/or mental health difficulties may serve as an example of this.
